Science Week

As part of the discover Primary Science and Maths program we celebrated Science Week from 9th to 13th November. We investigated water pressure, floating, sinking and evaporation. We looked at magnets and Bee Bots. We took on the marble run challenge and participated in Zoom workshops from the Sligo Science Festival.

Maths and Science

Each year the school participates in the DPSM to develop our interest and understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Children learn in a practical, hands on, enjoyable and interactive way.

Technology

To enrich the children’s learning, each child has access to an ipad or netbook on a daily basis. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard.

Green Schools

We have been awarded several green flags for our work on such themes as recycling, energy, travel and biodiversity. Our 5th and 6th class form the committee and help us all to develop a strong awareness of the importance of working together for a sustainable future.

We are presently working on our 8th green flag on the theme Global Citizenship and Marine Environments.  This theme will enable us to discover how our work on the Green-Schools programme will, positively, influence people and their local environments worldwide while focusing our work on our oceans and seas.

Our Green School’s slogan this year is “To save marine life is our wish, from dolphins to the smallest fish. Everyone we need to teach, to bring home their rubbish from the beach”  was composed by a junior infant.

Green-Schools is Ireland͛’s leading environmental management and award programme, working with primary and secondary schools across the country

School Garden

We recognise the importance of teaching children to grow their own food. We have several raised beds where children plant a variety of herbs, fruit and vegetables every year. The children maintain the beds and are always very proud of their harvest every year when their hard work pays off
